The Northern Territory has reported its fourth death from COVID-19, an unvaccinated man in his 80s with underlying health conditions.
In a statement, authorities said the man was a resident at the Old Timers Aged Care Service in Alice Springs.
"He passed away yesterday and the death was officially reported to NT Health late last night," the statement said.
"The NT government extends its sincere condolences to the man's family and loved ones at this sad time."
The number of COVID-19 patients in Northern Territory hospitals has jumped to a new record of 141, with 15 patients requiring oxygen.
There are six patients in the intensive care unit.
In a statement, NT Health announced 1,061 new coronavirus cases in the NT, including 84 that are being added to Wednesday's tally.
There were 658 cases recorded in the Top End Region, 149 in Central Australia, 65 in the East Arnhem region, 80 in the Big Rivers region, 15 in the Barkly region and 10 are under investigation.
The number of active cases in the NT is about 6,900.
The aged care resident is the NT's second COVID-19-related death in a week, after the death of a woman in her 50s from Mutitjulu was added to the tally yesterday.
The woman died in the Alice Springs hospital on Monday, and her death was later reclassified as having been caused by COVID-19.
The Northern Territory yesterday reported more than 1,100 new coronavirus cases.
It was a record caseload, but Health Minister Natasha Fyles warned the numbers could climb further in the coming days.
Authorities hope the daily cases will then reach their peak.
There have been more than 100 COVID-19 patients in hospitals across the NT for almost a week.
On Wednesday there were 13 cases in hospital requiring oxygen, with five people in intensive care.
Acting Deputy Chief Health Officer Charles Pain said yesterday it was placing "significant" strain on the local health system.
The first cases at the Alice Springs aged care home were detected about three weeks ago, prompting concerns about the spread of the virus through the sector.
Health authorities are expected to provide a more detailed coronavirus update later on Thursday.
