Unseen Arne Engels incident vs Kilmarnock given defiant Ref Watch verdict

Ex-English Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher says Arne Engels shouldn't have been sent off for an unseen incident in Celtic's win over Kilmarnock on Saturday.

The Parkhead side romped to an emphatic 5-1 victory thanks to goals from Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Anthony Ralston

In the first half, Kilmarnock midfielder Liam Donnelly went down after colliding with Engels in the middle of the pitch.

The incident was examined on Sky Sports' Ref Watch segment on Monday morning: "He collides with him, but it's not a red card, " said Gallagher.

"You'd be gutted to be sent off for that."

While Maeda got on the scoresheet, he could have had another had Adam Idah not been offside in the build-up.

Gallagher reckons disallowing the goal was the correct call: "It's very, very tight," he said.

"You can understand why the assistant doesn't see this.

"It is so tight, but VAR in Scotland, that's what it's for."

Gallagher was then quizzed on whether semi-automated offsides could be brought in in Scotland like is the case down south: "It depends on budget, it's not cheap," he said.

"It depends on what they've got in the kitty, because their VAR is slightly less comprehensive than what we've got in England."

After their victory over Kilmarnock, Celtic are within just a point of winning the Scottish Premiership title.

They could secure their fourth consecutive league championship in their first post-split fixture if they avoid defeat.
