UNRWA Staff Terrified And Fleeing After Strikes In Gaza

Israel strikes Gaza

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini expressed deep concern over the safety and well-being of his staff in Gaza following strikes in Tal al-Sultan in the early hours of Tuesday. Lazzarini reported that his staff are feeling 'terrified' and are in the process of packing up and relocating due to the escalating violence.

The main offices of the United Nations in Gaza are situated in the Tal al-Sultan area, making it challenging for most staff members to commute to work amidst the ongoing hostilities. Lazzarini highlighted the critical situation, stating that UNRWA is running out of essential medical supplies and basic medicines, further exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.

The lack of electricity and unreliable internet connectivity due to disruptions in the telecommunications network have further hampered relief efforts. The Commissioner-General described the current conditions as an 'endless horror show,' emphasizing the harsh reality faced by the people in Gaza who are struggling to find safety amid the escalating violence.

Recent reports from officials and residents in Gaza indicate that an Israeli attack occurred around 3 a.m. on Tuesday in Tal al-Sultan camp in western Rafah. The strike targeted three tents and resulted in the tragic loss of at least eight lives, further intensifying the humanitarian emergency in the region.
