The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has reported that its school in the Nuseirat refugee camp in Central Gaza was struck multiple times by Israeli airstrikes overnight into Thursday. The UNRWA Communications Director stated that they were unable to confirm Israeli claims that Hamas operatives were using the school as a compound.
It is emphasized that schools and other UN premises should never be utilized for military purposes, and all parties involved in the conflict are reminded to protect UN facilities at all times.
Since October 7, over 170 UNRWA buildings have been targeted, resulting in the tragic deaths of more than 450 displaced individuals within those facilities.
The school in Nuseirat refugee camp was serving as a shelter for displaced people when it was hit by the Israeli airstrike, leading to the loss of at least 45 lives, as reported by local authorities.
The Israeli military has confirmed carrying out the airstrike, claiming it was targeting a Hamas compound located within the school premises. However, these claims have not been independently verified by sources.
