Unprecedented Warmth Sweeps Across U.S. In Winter Record-Breaking Trend

First winter storm of 2024 in the U.S. Northeast, in Worcester

The current weather conditions in the U.S. Capitol are quite chilly, with temperatures hovering around freezing at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which is approximately 0 degrees Celsius. While much of North America is still experiencing cold weather, there are indications that warmer temperatures are on the horizon.

As we head towards the end of the week, some parts of the country may even see a need for air conditioning in cars. The upcoming weekend and the following week are expected to bring unseasonably warm weather to various regions across the United States.

On Sunday, high temperatures are forecasted to reach the 70s in cities like Kansas City and Oklahoma City, while areas like Dallas and Midland, Texas could see temperatures in the 80s. Even cities further east, such as Atlanta and Charleston, are expected to experience temperatures in the 60s, with places like St. Louis and Oklahoma City reaching the 80s and 70s, respectively, by Tuesday.

These temperatures are significantly above average for this time of year, with some areas experiencing departures from normal temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees. The warm air is moving eastward, leading to continued above-average temperatures, with some regions expected to stay 15 to 30 degrees warmer than usual through Tuesday.

Some areas may need air conditioning soon

Record-breaking temperatures are anticipated, with over 345 records potentially being surpassed throughout the week. Daytime highs and overnight lows are expected to set new records as the warm weather persists. In Dallas, Texas, temperatures could reach 90 degrees on Monday, tying a record set back in 1917 and sitting 35 degrees above the average for this time of year.

This trend of warm winter days is not uncommon in certain areas, with cities like Dallas experiencing more warm winter days since 1970. The central plains to the east coast and up towards the eastern seaboard have seen an increase in warm winter days, making winter the fastest warming season in many locations.

Many regions, particularly in the northeast and around the Great Lakes, are currently experiencing their warmest winter on record, with temperatures running four to five degrees above average. The data shows a clear trend of winter temperatures rising in various parts of the country, indicating a shift towards warmer winters in recent years.
