'Unpopular' German wine is seeing a revival with sales up 44%

German wine Riesling is officially having a revival as Lidl has today revealed that sales of its award-winning Mosel Riesling are up by 44%. Despite Riesling previously being seen as an unpopular, having a misconception of being overly sweet and a somewhat retro tipple, Lidl has seen a massive surge in sales of its Mosel Riesling thanks to its suitability to modern tastes.

In fact, it can be dry, it’s naturally low in alcohol at 10.5%, and highly versatile – leading to a surging popularity with shoppers. And it seems the wine is popular among customers and critics alike.

The £5.29 bottle recently won Silver at the internationally recognised IWSC awards, having scored an impressive 93 out of 100. Judges described it as having a “typical flinty nose with notes of elegant green fruits, wild flowers, and jasmine tones. Concentrated on the palate with pronounced acidity and a complex, classy finish.”

The Mosel Riesling wasn’t the only Lidl wine that scooped a much-lauded Silver at the IWSC. In total, the discounter’s wine range managed to bag 16 awards.

Another highlight was the retailer’s New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc 2022, which scored 90 points. Costing £6.99, the fan favourite as recognised for having “tropical notes on the nose with layers of flint and herbaceous fruits on the palate. Crisp grapefruit acidity gives a fresh and rounded style, with white currant notes on the finish. "

Lidl’s Mosel Riesling and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc are part of its core wine collection, meaning customers can get their hands on award winning wine all year round.
