Takeaways From The Loss
UNLV fell short of a win against California in Saturday’s 20-14 loss. It was a painful loss for UNLV because the win was well within reach for the Rebels.
Even though the game did not go UNLV’s way, there were still some positive takeaways. UNLV managed to keep the game close and had an opportunity to steal a win at the very end of the game. Here are a few key takeaways from Saturday’s game:
Doug Brumfield Looked Like He Secured His Job
Doug Brumfield kept the Rebels around for all four quarters and fought hard until the end. He passed for 206 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Brumfield completed 54% of his passes. It was not the cleanest performance for Brumfield, but he managed the game well and will get better with more reps.

Heading into the season, there were questions about UNLV’s top running back. Some people thought the offense could feature up to four running backs. After Week 2, Aidan Robbins staked his position as the leading rusher. Robbins ran for 84 yards on 14 rush attempts. Robbins legged out a 31-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Courtney Reese rushed four times for 11 yards.
The Defense Had Its Moments
The defense pressure California quarterback Jack Plummer for most of the game. UNLV sacked Plummer four times and Eliel Ehimare recorded the lone quarterback hurry for the Rebels. The defense also forced a red zone interception when defensive back Jerrae Williams picked off Plummer in the second quarter.
UNLV Will Be Competitive In Conference Play
While California was not looked at as one of the best teams in the Pac-12, it was a difficult task for UNLV to walk into California Memorial Stadium and compete for a win. UNLV nearly won the game and had several positive moments. UNLV finished the 2021 season with a 2-10 record and the Rebels have clearly improved. Look for the Rebels to win several games against Mountain West opponents.
In Week 3, UNLV will host North Texas at Allegiant Stadium.
