The University of Rochester recently discovered numerous 'wanted' posters targeting Jewish members of faculty posted around campus. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) has confirmed the removal of these posters and urges anyone who finds more to contact them.
DPS Chief Quchee Collins stated that several individuals are being investigated in connection with the incident, including current students and others. The posters accused Jewish faculty members of alleged 'war crimes' and other offenses related to the Israeli military's actions in Gaza.
University President Sarah Mangelsdorf strongly denounced the posters, labeling them as disturbing, divisive, and antisemitic. She emphasized that such behavior goes against the university's values and will not be tolerated.
The removal process of the posters caused damage to campus surfaces due to the strong adhesive used. DPS has offered safety support to those depicted on the posters and is working diligently to identify the culprits.
One of the individuals targeted on the posters, James Newell, believes he was falsely implicated due to a misunderstanding. Joy Getnick, another individual depicted, highlighted the harmful impact of such antisemitic propaganda on the campus community.
DPS is collaborating with various law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly. Chief Collins reassured the campus community of their commitment to safety and inclusivity, stating that there is no immediate threat to safety but acknowledging the intimidating nature of the posters.
