The University of Georgia has confirmed that one of its students was critically injured in the New Year's Day terrorist attack that occurred on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
The student is currently receiving medical treatment, according to a statement from UGA President Jere W. Morehead.
"I am deeply saddened by the devastating attack in New Orleans overnight, and I extend my sincere condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this terrible tragedy," Morehead said.
The University of Georgia is playing in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and many students and supporters have been in the city leading up to the game.
The university president shared that he had spoken with the injured student's family, offering his support and concern on behalf of the UGA community. "I would like to express my gratitude to all the first responders who moved so quickly to help those affected by this senseless act of violence, as well as to the medical personnel who are caring for the injured," he added.
Morehead assured that the university will provide support to those impacted by the tragedy and called on the UGA community to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts and prayers.
The attack, which involved a driver ramming into a crowd before firing at law enforcement, left several dead and injured. The FBI continues to investigate the incident as a terrorist act.
The Sugar Bowl was postponed until Thursday night due to the terror attack.
