A shocking incident took place in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning, resulting in the tragic loss of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson. Thompson was on his way to attend a UnitedHealthcare conference at the New York Hilton Hotel when the unfortunate event occurred.
According to reports, a gunman, who appeared to have been waiting for Thompson, opened fire from a distance of 20 feet as Thompson approached the hotel. The assailant fired multiple shots, fatally striking the 50-year-old CEO in the chest. Thompson was quickly transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Authorities have indicated that the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear at this time. Initial investigations suggest that the attack was targeted. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident, and the NYPD's investigation is ongoing.
UnitedHealthcare, the company for which Thompson served as CEO, has been reached out to for a statement regarding the tragic loss. Thompson had taken on the role of chief executive officer for UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. UnitedHealthcare operates as part of the larger UnitedHealth Group, a prominent entity ranked fifth in the Fortune 500 list.
