The United Nations has announced new actions to combat the rise in antisemitism, urging governments to enforce laws against hate crimes and discrimination. This initiative comes in response to a surge in antisemitic incidents both online and offline, including attacks on synagogues and religious sites.
The U.N. Action Plan to Enhance Monitoring and Response to Antisemitism focuses on strengthening and coordinating efforts within the United Nations, while also providing recommendations for governments and organizations. The plan emphasizes the need for training all U.N. personnel on antisemitism and Holocaust denial, as well as implementing zero tolerance policies for antisemitism.
Miguel Moratinos, head of the U.N. Alliance of Civilizations, expressed concern over the recent increase in antisemitic incidents and stressed the importance of addressing hate speech while upholding human rights. The plan includes the establishment of a working group to monitor and evaluate the impact of policies aimed at combating antisemitism within the U.N.
Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, the U.S. special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, along with U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield, highlighted the need for concrete steps to be taken to implement the plan effectively. They emphasized the importance of the U.N. demonstrating its commitment to its human rights mandate and making tangible progress in the fight against antisemitism.
