UAW Endorses Joe Biden for President, Citing Commitment to American Workers

In a significant endorsement for the presidential race, the United Auto Workers (UAW) has thrown their support behind candidate Joe Biden. With their significant personnel and power, this endorsement is seen as a major boost to Biden's re-election campaign.

When questioned about the decision not to consider Donald Trump for their endorsement, UAW representatives pointed to the stark contrast in the candidates' records and statements. They emphasized that throughout history, Trump has never stood for the American worker and has opposed many of the principles that the UAW stands for.

The UAW's endorsement of Joe Biden may appear late in the campaign to some observers, but the union clarified that there were no doubts or concerns about their decision. They followed a thorough process to ensure that endorsements are earned rather than freely given. The UAW leadership took into account various factors, including their recent successful contract fight with the big three automakers. They highlighted Biden's support during the strike, contrasting it with Trump's lack of involvement during the 40-day General Motors strike in 2019.

When asked about their choice not to meet with Donald Trump like the Teamsters' President James P. O'Brien did, the UAW representatives emphasized Trump's history of blaming workers during the economic recession in 2008-2009 and his comments about rotating jobs to pay lower wages. They also mentioned his lack of support for workers in various instances, including the closure of the Lordstown Assembly Plant and his failure to help save jobs.

The UAW spoke highly of Biden's support for workers, citing his presence on picket lines and his involvement in saving jobs in Belvedere, Illinois. They also acknowledged Biden's commitment to environmental concerns, particularly his advocacy for electric vehicles (EVs). The UAW asserted that they would adapt to the changing industry and fight for jobs, while ensuring a just transition for workers.

Addressing the fact that some UAW members are avid Trump supporters, the union emphasized that diverse political beliefs are a fundamental aspect of democracy. They acknowledged that while some members may vote for Biden, the majority will cast their votes based on their economic interests.

The UAW endorsement adds to Biden's support among labor unions and highlights his focus on the working class. As the election approaches, many will be closely watching the impact of this endorsement on the race for the presidency.
