A USA-bound flight was forced to make an emergency landing after taking off from Edinburgh Airport around 11am today. The crew on United Airlines flight UA-37 declared a mid-air alert, shortly after departing the Scottish capital, and landed in Ireland on Wednesday afternoon.
The flight landed safely at Shannon Airport, County Clare, at 12.05pm, and was met by emergency services on the ground. It is understood the Boeing 767-400 (ER) jet broadcast an emergency squawk signal after suffering pressurisation issues.
Engineers are currently investigating the cause of the problem and the airline has apologised to the 252 passengers and crew on board the aircraft - bound for Newark, New Jersey - for the inconvenience.
A United Airlines spokesperson told breakingnews.ie : "Our team at Shannon Airport is providing assistance to customers of United flight 37 (Edinburgh-New York/Newark) which diverted to Shannon Airport to address a technical issue.
"Our maintenance team is currently inspecting the aircraft which is currently scheduled to depart from Shannon for New York/Newark at 2:00 pm (local time) today. We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused."
