A new funeral business has launched in Ireland to give people more agency over their final send off.
'My Farewell Wishes' was co-founded by undertaker Colm Kieran last year as demand grows for funeral pre-planning services. People can secure a record of their wishes for a cost of €65 and are granted their own official copy.
Colm explained that a gap in the market post Brexit left the service feasible. He argued that people should have the same say over their funerals as they would for other milestone occasions, such as weddings and family events.

He told Dublin Live: "We find there’s a generation of people post retirement who know what the practical thing to do is and want a discussion. The generation after that find it morbid and don’t like to talk about it but parents do and they want things organised."
The businessman confirmed that funeral costs, including coffins and manufacturing, have risen significantly amid inflation. He said that pre-planning a funeral empowers people financially and helps avoid potential family fallouts ahead of time.
People have a separate opportunity outside of the registry of wishes to make payments towards their funeral costs. Donations of anywhere over €500 are secured through an official trust.
Colm knew the service was important immediately after it was first advertised. He explained that a recent widow came to visit him at his office seeking out further information.
He said: "She wanted to make sure the same decisions she had to face weren't endured by her daughter and son. She was very anxious and nervous when she arrived but left the office 15 minutes later with peace of mind that everything would be looked after."
'My Farewell Wishes' is supported by over 40 funeral homes nationwide. Funeral directors offering the service in the Dublin surroundings are featured below.
