A joint platform of 10 Central unions and several independent sectoral federations on Tuesday concluded a two-day strike they had called to protest against the government’s policies.
In a statement, the joint platform said workers in public sector banks, insurance companies, coal sector and transport, among others, struck work on Monday and Tuesday. The unions said the Samyukt Kisan Morcha had supported the demands of workers and farmers.
The unions protested against the government’s plans to monetise national assets, changes in labour laws, the unemployment level and hike in fuel prices. The joint platform, comprising INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC, called for unity between workers and farmers in their agitations against the government.
