The Jammu & Kashmir Police on Tuesday said that a local militant, Owais Raja, a resident of Subhanpora, had been killed during an anti-militancy operation in south Kashmir’s Pulwama.
“As per police records, the killed terrorist was a categorised terrorist of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). He was a part of a group involved in several terror crime cases, including attacks on security forces,” a police spokesperson said.
Raja was trapped in Charsoo village of Awantipora by the J&K Police, the Army’s 42 Rashtriya Rifles and the 130 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), during an operation launched “on a specific input generated by the police”.
“The hiding terrorist fired indiscriminately upon the search party, which was retaliated effectively, leading to an encounter. This operation was very important as it is situated very close to the national highway and a threat was imminent,” Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said.
The police said incriminating materials, including one AK-56 rifle, three AK magazines and 80 rounds of AK ammunition was recovered from the site of the encounter. “All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” the police added.
