Underwater search teams comb gorge for young woman missing for four days

An underwater search team has started scouring a gorge in the hunt for a young woman who has been missing for four days.

Concern is growing for Sophie Lambert, 22, who was last seen leaving her home in Harrogate, North Yorkshire on Friday at around 7pm.

Police issued CCTV images of the woman, wearing dark trousers, a black top with a white adidas logo, as she left her front door.

Now, specialist teams - including the underwater search crew and RAF Mountain Rescue - have joined the extensive operation in Nidd Gorge, an ancient woodland on steep cliffs around three miles from Sophie's home.

Officers have chosen the area because some of Sophie's possessions were discovered nearby on Saturday, Yorkshire Live reports.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "We have today continued our efforts to find 22-year-old Sophie, who went missing from home on Friday 16 June.

"Searches have continued today in the Nidd Gorge area with assistance from specialist Search and Rescue teams, including police underwater search teams and RAF Mountain Rescue.

"The search for Sophie is focussed near to the area where some of Sophie’s personal possessions were found on Saturday 17 June by a member of the public.

"Sophie left her home in Starbeck just after 7pm on Friday 16 June and despite lots of calls and information from concerned members of the public, there have been no positive sightings of her since."

The police spokesperson added: "She was wearing black trousers, a black adidas top with a white logo and dark trainers/shoes with a white sole. She had her hair tied back with a light coloured scrunchie and was carrying a bottle with a pink lid.

"If you have seen a woman matching Sophie’s description or photograph, please call on 999 for immediate sightings or 101 with any other information, quoting reference 12230110845. Thank you for your continued support and care."

Inspector Graham Walker, from North Yorkshire Police, said: "We're looking into all possibilities as to what's happened to Sophie Lambert. There's been no positive sightings of her.

"A member of public found items belonging to Sophie in the Nidd Gorge on Saturday morning. We are focusing on the river at this time."
