Sources say gardai were last night trying to establish how she suffered her injuries – but do not believe at this stage she was assaulted or was the victim of a hit and run.
She was being treated at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar – where her condition was described as critical.
A Garda spokesman said yesterday that officers in Castlebar were appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.
He said: ”Gardaí at Castlebar are appealing for witnesses following the discovery of a woman with unexplained injuries in County Mayo on Sunday, 16th October, 2022.
“The woman, who is aged in her late 50s, was found unconscious by a passer-by shortly after 4am on the N5 at Cloggernagh, Islaneady.

“Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses."
They are particularly appealing to motorists with camera footage (including dash-cam) who travelled through Islaneady on the N5 in the early hours this morning,.
