UNC QB Drake Maye lands with the Commanders on a new mock draft

The Washington Commanders are currently second in the 2024 NFL draft order. With one game to play, a Washington loss would go a long way toward the Commanders securing the No. 2 overall selection.

With Washington almost assuredly picking in the top three, a quarterback is likely the Commanders’ top target under new ownership. What we don’t know currently is who will be making those decisions. Head coach Ron Rivera is expected to be fired next week. Washington is expected to hire a new general manager and head coach.

With one game remaining, the draft order is becoming much clearer. That means we should start seeing plenty of mock drafts.

Connor Livesay of The 33rd Team recently revealed his latest mock draft, and he has the Commanders bringing Sam Howell’s former teammate to Washington as its franchise quarterback.

Fit: Somehow, the Washington Commanders cannot get away from Sam Howell. A week after announcing Howell’s benching, Jacoby Brissett suffered a hamstring injury in practice leading up to their week 17 game against San Francisco, forcing Howell back into the lineup.

Washington is all but announcing they will be in the quarterback market this offseason, and picking second overall locks them into one of the two top quarterbacks.

I don’t necessarily agree that Washington “cannot get away from Sam Howell.” The Commanders have handled Howell poorly all season.

Regardless, Washington will draft a quarterback. And Maye is considered one of the elite quarterback prospects, along with Caleb Williams. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Maye has everything NFL teams covet in a passer. He has size, arm strength, athleticism and accuracy. He’s been compared to Justin Herbert.

The last time Washington had the No. 2 overall pick was in 2020. The franchise chose Chase Young, while Herbert went four picks later to the Chargers.
