UN Warns Of Looming Starvation Crisis In Gaza

Displaced Palestinians wait to receive free food at a tent camp, amid food shortages, in Rafah

More than a million Palestinians are at risk of starvation by next month as a result of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, as highlighted by the United Nations' relief chief. The situation in Gaza and Sudan has been described as dire, with millions of people on the brink of famine, according to the UN.

The UN emphasized that while technicalities may prevent formal declarations of famine, the reality is that people are already succumbing to hunger. Urgent action is needed to prevent further loss of life.

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, stressed the preventable nature of famine in the 21st century. He called on G7 leaders to use their influence to address the crisis, warning that delays in response could have devastating consequences for hundreds of thousands of individuals.

Griffiths specifically pointed out that over one million individuals in Gaza are at risk of death and starvation by mid-July. He emphasized that humanitarian aid alone is not sufficient to address the root causes of the conflicts in these regions.

The UN official urged G7 countries to leverage their political power and financial resources to ensure that aid organizations can reach all those in need. He emphasized the need to halt the cycle of violence that is leading to the starvation of civilians in Gaza and Sudan.

Griffiths called for a shift towards prioritizing diplomacy to secure a better future for affected populations. He underscored the critical role of the G7 in leading efforts to address the crisis and prevent further loss of life.
