UN Warns Israel Of Potential Genocide In Gaza

U.N. building in New York

The United Nations Human Rights Office has issued a stark warning about the ongoing military offensive in northern Gaza by Israel, expressing concerns about the potential destruction of the Palestinian population through 'death and displacement.'

According to the OHCHR statement released on Sunday, the situation in Gaza has become increasingly dire, with Israeli military operations intensifying in recent weeks. The year-long bombardment has resulted in the deaths of over 42,000 people and widespread destruction across the territory.

The OHCHR highlighted the challenges faced by Palestinians in northern Gaza, where life has been made 'impossible' by the Israeli military. Despite calls for civilians to evacuate the area, bombings and attacks have continued, particularly in and around Jabalya Camp.

The manner in which hostilities are being conducted raises concerns that the Palestinian population in Gaza's northern governate, specifically in Jabalya, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanoun, is at risk of destruction through death and displacement.

Furthermore, the OHCHR referenced the provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice in January, which called on Israel to take all necessary actions to prevent genocide in relation to Palestinians in Gaza.

It is important to note that Israel's relationship with the United Nations has deteriorated significantly during the conflict in Gaza. A recent UN inquiry accused Israel of deliberately targeting and destroying the healthcare system in the territory, labeling these actions as potential war crimes. In response, the Israeli foreign ministry dismissed the accusations as 'outrageous.'
