UN urges countries to continue funding Gaza despite Hamas allegations

UNRWA urges countries to reconsider cutting off funding over alleged staff involvement in attacks.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has called on several countries to reconsider their decision to cut off funding following allegations that some staff members were involved in the Hamas attacks on Israel that took place on October 7th. Austria has now joined the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries in suspending funding for UNRWA. In an effort to achieve a potential ceasefire and secure the release of hostages, Israel has engaged in high-level talks with the United States, Egypt, and Qatar.

Recent discussions between the involved parties have shown some progress, although significant gaps remain. A meeting in Paris brought together the intelligence chiefs of the United States, Israel, Qatar, and Egypt, who are seen as the key players in any potential deal. While Israel's Prime Minister's Office stated that the meeting was constructive, it acknowledged that challenges still need to be addressed.

However, tensions have arisen between the negotiating parties. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticized Qatar for not doing enough to support the release of the hostages and accused them of aligning too closely with Hamas. Qatar, on the other hand, has expressed discontent with Netanyahu's remarks. Despite these challenges, the talks are ongoing.

Additionally, there have been recent developments regarding the funding of humanitarian aid for Gaza. UNRWA, responsible for assisting Palestinian refugees in Gaza, is urging countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria, Japan, and others to continue their financial support. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the desperate situation faced by the two million people in Gaza who rely on UNRWA's assistance. Funding is set to expire by the end of February, adding urgency to the situation.

Israel alleged that nine UNRWA members had involvement in the Hamas attacks on October 7th, leading the UN to promptly dismiss them. Two more individuals are currently under investigation. Norway and Ireland have stood apart from other countries, deciding against temporarily withdrawing their funding. They believe it is crucial to continue aid to Gaza and have placed their trust in the United Nations to conduct a thorough investigation.

The decision to suspend funding for UNRWA during this time of war has been met with strong criticism. UNRWA's head described it as shocking, emphasizing the detrimental impact on the people of Gaza who rely on this assistance. The situation remains fluid, as parties strive to find a resolution to the conflict and ensure the well-being of those affected in Gaza.
