War and persecution are driving record numbers of people, including women and girls, to flee their homes. Most remain in their home countries, like Sudan, or in already fragile neighbouring countries such as Pakistan and Lebanon. But it is vital that all countries, including the UK, continue to take their share of responsibility for offering protection to refugees.
In the aftermath of the Holocaust, the UN refugee convention was signed to ensure that the rights and protections of refugees were established under international law. This convention continues to offer an adequate framework for supporting refugees and asylum seekers. In an unstable world, where needs are growing, the refugee convention is as important and necessary as ever.
