The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called on governments to take immediate action to address the worsening human rights and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the escalating violence in the West Bank. In a recent statement, he highlighted the urgent need to resolve the catastrophic situation facing civilians in Gaza, where nearly 1.7 million people remain forcibly displaced and living in appalling conditions.
The High Commissioner criticized Israel for imposing unlawful restrictions on the entry and distribution of humanitarian assistance in Gaza, as well as carrying out widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure. He also expressed concern over the rising violence and targeted attacks in the West Bank, where at least 196 humanitarian workers have been killed since October.
In the past week, around 10,000 people were displaced from Nuseirat camp and near Wadi Gaza, further exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation in the region. The High Commissioner emphasized the need for immediate action to protect civilians and ensure their safety.
He also raised alarm over the escalating violence in the West Bank, where Palestinians have faced attacks by Israeli settlers, often with the support of Israeli Security Forces. The recent killing of a 14-year-old Israeli boy from a settler family has further heightened tensions in the region.
The UN has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for a response to the accusations of violence and human rights violations. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and calling for urgent measures to address the crisis and protect the rights of civilians in Gaza and the West Bank.
