The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Tor Wennesland, addressed the UN Security Council regarding the escalating situation in Rafah. Wennesland expressed concern over the intensifying devastation as Israel expands its ground operations in the region.
Wennesland highlighted the lack of progress in reaching a ceasefire agreement and securing the release of hostages, attributing the delay to the ongoing Israeli military actions in and around Rafah. He condemned a recent tragic incident where an airstrike led to the deaths of at least 45 individuals and left over 200 others injured, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians.
Furthermore, Wennesland called for the reopening of the Rafah crossing to facilitate humanitarian access throughout Gaza. He also addressed a concerning incident of looting at a base belonging to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees in Rafah, noting that an investigation is underway.
Wennesland warned of the escalating risk of a broader regional conflict if the current trajectory of the conflict persists. He urged all parties involved to return to negotiations promptly and engage in sincere dialogue to prevent further catastrophic consequences.
