A specialized United Nations committee is set to review whether Palestine will be granted full state member status in the UN this month. The decision was announced by Vanessa Frazier, the UN Ambassador of Malta and Security Council's president for April.
Frazier stated that the council has determined that the deliberation on Palestine's statehood request must take place during the month of April 2024. Following a closed-door session, the UN Security Council has referred the request to the Committee on the Admission of New Members.
The committee convened its first meeting on Monday to initiate discussions on Palestine's renewed application for full state membership. The Palestinian Mission to the UN initially submitted a request for recognition as a full member state back in 2011. Subsequently, in November 2012, Palestine was granted 'non-member observer state' status.
It is noteworthy that the United States has historically advocated for Israelis and Palestinians to resolve the issue between themselves. The upcoming deliberations within the UN committee will play a crucial role in determining the future status of Palestine within the international community.
