UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a stark warning on Friday regarding the escalating situation in Rafah, emphasizing the potential for a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Guterres expressed concerns that a significant ground offensive in Rafah could result in an 'epic humanitarian disaster' and jeopardize ongoing efforts to address the looming famine crisis.

The warning from Guterres comes amidst a temporary halt in ceasefire-for-hostage negotiations, with reports indicating an intensification of military operations by Israel in Rafah. The UN chief highlighted the critical importance of finding a peaceful resolution to prevent further bloodshed and secure the release of hostages.

Guterres, speaking at the Civil Society Conference in Nairobi, underscored the precarious nature of the situation in Rafah, noting the continued airstrikes in southern Gaza. He urged both the Israeli government and Hamas leadership to demonstrate political courage and commit to ending the violence.

Addressing the urgent need for humanitarian assistance, Guterres emphasized the necessity of ensuring the entry of life-saving supplies, including fuel, through key crossings such as Rafah and Kerem Shalom. He reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of hostages, and a significant increase in aid delivery to the affected population.

The UN chief stressed that the fate of Palestinians, Israelis, and the broader region hinges on the decisions made in the coming days. With tensions escalating and the humanitarian situation deteriorating, Guterres urged all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilian lives and work towards a sustainable peace agreement.
