United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed grave concern over the recent attacks in Beirut and Tehran, labeling them as a dangerous escalation in the region. Guterres emphasized the need for a shift in focus towards achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of Israeli hostages, increased humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza, and a return to calm in Lebanon and along the Blue Line.
The Blue Line serves as a demarcation line separating Lebanon from Israel and the Golan Heights. Guterres highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating that mere restraint is insufficient given the current sensitivity of the circumstances. He called on all parties to actively pursue regional de-escalation to safeguard long-term peace and stability for all involved.
The Secretary-General underscored the importance of international cooperation in utilizing diplomacy to defuse tensions and prevent any actions that could potentially destabilize the entire Middle East region. He warned against undermining the collective efforts aimed at achieving peace and urged for a united front in working towards a peaceful resolution.
