Later this month, Red, White & Royal Blue is getting its big, royal unveiling. The film adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel focuses on an unexpected romance between the US president’s hedonistic, party-loving son Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and England’s stiff-upper-lipped Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine).
International relations initially get off to a rocky start when Henry and Alex’s bitter rivalry leaves them rolling around on the floor and covered in very expensive cake. When the pair’s feud starts to impact her campaign for reelection, Texan Democrat and US president Ellen Claremont orders her son to fly to England to patch things up.
He and Prince Henry initially grit their teeth, but their hatred soon makes way for something else entirely. Together, they must battle against traditions and the status quo, while trying to keep their blossoming relationship as something that can be revealed on their own terms.
And this new clip, shared exclusively with the Standard, gives a first glimpse at one of Alex Claremont-Diaz’s biggest first steps – the moment he decides he must let his incredibly powerful politician mother know what’s been going on behind closed doors. Not only is he faced with the task of coming out, there’s also another issue at play; since Ellen’s presidency is hanging in the balance and her son’s high-profile partner could be the thing to send it off the rails. The man he’s fallen in love with happens to be an heir to the British monarchy. No big deal.
In this early glimpse, ahead of the film’s release tomorrow, we see that his bombshell goes down as well as could possibly be expected. Uma Thurman plays the president with a steely kindness and a hefty Southern twang, silently sliding into her Oval Office chair (presumably out of shock).
“I’ve met someone…” he starts. “Honey, that’s great!” exclaim’s Thurman’s president, who sounds vaguely like Dolly Parton. “And why would that be relevant to the campaign? She’s not a Republican is she?”
“No,” Alex says. “She’s also a he, and he happens to be… Henry.”
“As in… the Prince of England,” President Claremont says before picking up the phone, much to her son’s horror. Though he’s fearful that she’s about to take action against his relationship, she instead decides to call for reinforcements.
“We’re gonna need some pizza,” she announces.
The first female president, knowing the precise moment to order in a takeaway? What kind of incredible utopia is this?
