Ulrika Jonsson says sun is her 'drug' and says addiction so bad she will 'no doubt, die by it'

Popular TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson has spoken openly about her tanning addiction and says she will "no doubt, die by it".

The TV presenter and model, 52, who has been dubbed Benidorm's Madge Harvey by fans worried about the harm she is doing to her skin, has even called the sun her "drug".

The former Gladiator and Shooting Stars host has also talked about being stunned by "pale, colourless, doughy and pasty" Brits she encountered when she moved to the UK from Sweden in 1979, reports The Mirror.

"My drug of choice is the sun and as I've lived by the sword, I shall, no doubt, die by it — as long as it's in the sun," she wrote in her column for The Sun.

Ulrika says she is not prepared to give up her dose of the sun anytime soon - despite knowing how harmful it can be and how it can lead to premature aging.

She says of comparisons to actress Sheila Reid, who plays Madge in the hit ITV comedy: "Fortunately for me, I tan easily, go a dark brown and I have no qualms about accepting that I look like Madge Harvey in Benidorm (OK, possibly a bit older)."

The character of Madge, often seen riding around the Spanish complex's pool on her motability scooter, is known for her extremely dark tan in the ITV comedy series.

The blonde star said the sun is in her DNA, and has always been "envious" of those with glowing tans.

She admitted she was shocked by her school friends, saying they looked like they were at "death's door" with their paler skin.

Ulrika says she is addicted to sunbathing, and would "rather be a bit brown" as she prefers being natural and not wearing make-up.

During lockdown, she has been sunbathing in her garden, even when working.

She said in her column: "So forgive me if I top up my tan and love every moment of this hot sunshine with reckless abandon."
