Despite Rakitsky's vulnerable position, he spoke out on social media in support of his country, posting a picture of the Ukraine flag in support of homeland during the most difficult of times.
And Rakitsky was dropped from their starting line-up, although it hasn't been confirmed exactly what the true meaning behind the decision is.
The defender was benched when he is usually one of the first names on the team sheet, and due to Russia's involvement with Zenit, it's been assumed that it was a political decision.
The match ended in a 0-0 draw, but Zenit have been knocked out of the competition as the first leg finished 3-2 to Betis, meaning that their European dream is over for this season.
Spartak Moscow remain the only Russian team left in Europe, as they await to see who they will face in the next round of the Europa League.
