Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Washington for crucial meetings with U.S. officials as the issue of American support for Ukraine becomes a focal point in the upcoming presidential election. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, has pledged to continue providing military assistance to Ukraine if elected. Zelenskyy is set to meet with President Joe Biden and later with Harris.

However, Zelenskyy's relationship with former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, has soured. Trump criticized Zelenskyy, questioning the billions of dollars in aid given to Ukraine. The political landscape in Washington has become challenging for Zelenskyy, with Ukrainian officials striving to maintain positive relations with the next U.S. president, who plays a crucial role in providing support to Ukraine.

The recent tensions escalated when Zelenskyy criticized Trump's running mate, JD Vance, and dismissed Trump's ability to negotiate a solution to the conflict with Russia. Zelenskyy's visit to a Pennsylvania munitions factory was seen as a political move by Republicans, with House Speaker Mike Johnson accusing him of election interference.

Despite the political divide, Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with bipartisan groups of House members and senators during his visit. The Ukrainian leader's trip coincides with the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York, where he addressed the assembly. There were speculations of a meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump, but it did not materialize.

Concerns have been raised about the impact of a potential Trump presidency on U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, given his past actions and statements regarding Russia. Experts emphasize the importance of supporting Ukraine to deter further Russian aggression while seeking a negotiated end to the conflict.

Harris, who met Zelenskyy before the Russian invasion, has expressed strong support for Ukraine's defense. She contrasted her stance with Trump's, highlighting the significance of U.S. backing in preventing Russian advances.
