Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently expressed optimism that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine could come to an end next year. Zelensky emphasized the importance of Russia's willingness to end the war, as well as the support of the United States and other global players in achieving peace.
During a conference on food security, Zelensky highlighted the need for a stronger position from America and backing from the Global South to facilitate the resolution of the conflict. He stated, 'It will not be an easy path, but I am confident that we have every chance to do it next year.'
Zelensky also mentioned his openness to receiving proposals from leaders of African countries, Asia, and Arab states, in addition to eagerly awaiting suggestions from the incoming US President. He expressed hope that a plan to end the war could be formulated once the new administration takes office in January.
In a separate interview with Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne, Zelensky suggested that the war could end more swiftly once President-elect Donald Trump assumes office. He stressed the importance of diplomatic efforts in bringing about a resolution, stating, 'We must do everything to ensure that the war ends next year through diplomatic means.'
Trump's stance on the conflict has been a subject of scrutiny, with his past comments raising questions about continued US aid to Ukraine. The President-elect has previously claimed that the war would not have occurred if he had been in office and even asserted that he could resolve the conflict in a single day, although specifics on his proposed approach remain unclear.
