Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday that Ukrainian forces have successfully taken control of the Russian town of Sudzha. This development comes more than a week after Kyiv's forces initiated a cross-border incursion into Russia's Kursk region.
The town of Sudzha, situated approximately 105 kilometers southwest of the city of Kursk, has been under the control of Kyiv's forces since last Wednesday. President Zelensky's confirmation marks the official acknowledgment of the town's capture by the Ukrainian army.
According to Ukrainian military chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Ukrainian troops have made significant progress, advancing 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) through Russian defenses since the commencement of their surprise assault. As a result, they have managed to secure 1150 square kilometers of territory and have taken control of 82 settlements.
Syrskyi further stated that a military commandant's office has been established in Sudzha to ensure the maintenance of law and order, as well as to address the essential needs of the population residing in the controlled territories.
