Ukrainian born Mila Kunis and her husband Ashton Kutcher pledge $3m to her country

Proud Ukrainian born Mila Kunis and her movie star husband Ashton Kutcher have pledged $3m to help her country during the devastating Russian invasion.

The 38-year-old American actress herself fled conflict in her birth country at the age of seven when she and her Jewish family fled from Soviet Ukraine to the United States.

And as conflict has flared up again in her home country, Mila and her husband have offered to match $3 million in donations to support those whose lives have been ripped apart by the war.

Sharing a video to Aston's Instagram the couple spoke directly to followers, as Mila explained: "I moved here in 1991 and I've always considered myself an American. I love everything this country has done for myself and my family. But today I have never been more proud to be a Ukrainian."

"And I couldn't be more proud to be married to a Ukrainian", said her husband Aston.

Mila continues: "The events that have unfolded in the Ukraine are just devastating, there is no place in this world for such a unjust attack on humanity."

The Hollywood stars said they would match donations made via their GoFundme appeal to rental company AirBnB and freight transporter Flexport, with the aim of raising $33m (£22.5m).

Aston, added: “While we witness the bravery of the people in the country she was born in, we’re also witness to the needs of those who have chosen safety.”

“The people of Ukraine are strong and brave but being strong and brave doesn’t mean you’re not worthy of support. We need to support the people of Ukraine," Mila said.

The couple's GoFundMe page has so far attracted $3million and was given an immediate lift by an offline donation of $2.5m from Ron Conway family.

The appeal comes as the conflict continues to rage as last night Russian tanks were seen firing at buildings at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in south-east Ukraine causing a fire to break out.

Boris Johnson has called for an urgent meeting of the UN security council over the firefight which he said ' threatens the safety of all of Europe'.

Over a million refugees have now fled Ukraine to seek safety from the conflict.
