Ukraine's Zelensky Open To Deal On Rare Earth Minerals

Volodymyr Zelensky Ukraine's President Zelenskiy, Moldova's President Sandu and President of the European Council Michel attend a joint press conference in Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed openness to signing a deal that would grant the United States access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. This offer comes with the condition that Washington provides security guarantees to Kyiv in return.

During a news conference on Monday, Zelensky emphasized the importance of considering what Ukraine stands to gain from such an agreement. He mentioned that Ukraine is eager to receive a more detailed plan from the US regarding the potential deal.

Over the weekend, Zelensky revealed that he had prevented one of his ministers from signing the initial draft of an agreement with the US. This agreement would have allowed the US access to Ukraine’s mineral deposits in exchange for future military aid.

President Donald Trump has also weighed in on the matter, expressing the need for a tangible return on US assistance to Ukraine. Trump highlighted the strategic value of Ukraine's resources, including rare earth minerals, oil, and gas, and emphasized the importance of securing US investments.

Despite recent setbacks in Ukraine's aspirations to join NATO, Zelensky underscored the significance of including security guarantees in any potential agreement with the US. He mentioned that such guarantees could involve NATO or alternative security arrangements.

As discussions between Ukraine and the US continue, the focus remains on balancing the economic benefits of accessing Ukraine's resources with the need for robust security assurances. Both parties are working towards a mutually beneficial agreement that addresses the strategic interests of both nations.
