Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba Resigns Amid Government Overhaul

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, left, and Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba speak with the media as they arrive for a meeting of EU foreign ministers at the European Council

A recent wave of resignations has hit Ukraine's government, with the unexpected departure of Dmytro Kuleba, the esteemed foreign minister known for his relentless efforts in garnering Western support for his country's defense. This exodus saw six Cabinet ministers tendering their resignations to parliament through handwritten notes, offering scant explanations for their decisions. Kuleba's exit, though not yet formally approved by parliament, marked the culmination of this series of departures.

During his tenure, the 43-year-old Kuleba emerged as a prominent figure on the international stage, second only to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, fostering close ties with key figures such as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and European leaders. He vocally advocated for Western solidarity in the face of the Russian invasion, emphasizing the significance of resisting autocracy.

Despite Kuleba's departure, experts like Olexiy Haran, a political science professor at Kyiv Mohyla University, believe that Ukrainian foreign policy is unlikely to undergo significant changes, given the pool of potential successors. Kuleba, the son of a diplomat, has been a staunch advocate for Ukraine's alignment with the West, a conviction shaped during his formative years at an international school in Vienna.

Kuleba's upbringing and convictions shaped his strong alignment with the West.

Known for his analytical prowess and penchant for cooking metaphors, Kuleba played a pivotal role in representing Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict, often opting for business attire in contrast to the military garb favored by Zelenskyy and his inner circle. Speculation abounds that Kuleba's departure may be linked to disagreements with influential figures within Zelenskyy's administration, particularly those involved in defense and foreign affairs.

As Ukraine grapples with the ongoing conflict and anticipates potential shifts in international support, Zelenskyy's government remains tight-lipped about the recent reshuffle. In a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris, Zelenskyy alluded to the need for 'new energy' across various domains, including diplomacy.

Despite the upheaval, Kuleba maintained his composure, fulfilling his scheduled commitments and issuing a forceful condemnation of Russian airstrikes that claimed civilian lives in Lviv. His parting words underscored the necessity for resolute action and unwavering leadership in the face of Russian aggression.
