Russia is battering Ukraine with a fresh wave of missile strikes amid reports of serious losses for Vladimir Putin’s army.

Ukrainian authorities said one of the strikes - happening from east to west - killed a 79-year-old woman and injured at least seven others.

Russian forces fired 36 missiles in a two-hour overnight bombardment, Ukraine‘s military chief Valery Zaluzhny said.

He added Ukrainian air defence batteries shot down 16 of them - a lower rate of success than against some previous Russian attacks.

The head of Ukraine‘s presidential office, Andriy Yermak, said Russian forces “changed their tactics” for the strike, deploying what he described as “active reconnaissance” and “false targets”.

It comes as Ukraine’s deputy defence minister warned the country is facing "around-the-clock" attacks, but said Russia was suffering "very serious losses" in the new offensive.

Elsewhere, Russia has started deploying tactical nuclear weapons-armed vessels in the Baltic Sea for the first time in three decades, according to a Norwegian intelligence report.
