Ukraine morning briefing: 6am air-raid sirens wake up besieged country

Instead of being woken by their alarm clocks this morning, Ukrainians have been roused from their beds by the familiar sound of air-raid sirens across the country. Local media reports have said that the sirens were heard in the regions of Lviv, Kyiv, Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia at 6am (4am GMT)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's latest video message to his people, meanwhile, saw him accuse Vladimir Putin's army of "cowardice from top to bottom" overnight. His comments came as a riposte to Russian suggestions that Ukrainian troops had murdered their own civilians following the release of graphic photographs of some of the war's casualties.

The Ukrainian leader also insisted that Russia was "afraid" of losing and the truth of their actions being exposed and added that the invading country had been "killing people and children on our land for eight years". He went on to calculate that 2,000 missiles have now rained down on Ukrainian cities, towns and villages and admitted that he is expecting heavy bombardment in the east of the country during coming days.

Mr Zelensky vowed to keep addressing parliaments across the world too and will continue to meet as many fellow leaders in his own country before suggesting that he expects Germany to increase their level of support for the war effort following talks with Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday night.

In his speech, Mr Zelensky said: "The Russian militaries have already lied to the fact that even after more than six weeks of war, they claim that they did not hit any of the civilian objects! Do you know why this is so? Because it's cowardice. Total. Of everyone. Top to bottom.

"Next week will be no less important than this one than the previous ones. It will be just as tense and even more responsible. Russia will be even more afraid. Afraid to lose. Afraid that the truth will have to be admitted."

Biden has no plans to visit Ukraine, says adviser

US President Joe Biden currently has "no plans to visit Ukraine", the White House has said. It follow's UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, prompting NBC's Chuck Todd to direct the following question at the White House's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan: "It was quite the symbol to see Prime Minister Boris Johnson walking the streets of Kyiv with President Zelensky. It raises the question: are we going see President Biden in Kyiv?"

Mr Sullivan replied: "President Biden doesn't currently have any plans to travel to Kyiv. But I will tell you he sits in the Oval Office and in the Situation Room on a daily basis, organizing and coordinating the world when it comes to the delivery of weapons."

In tandem with this comments, CBS News show 60 Minutes also aired an explosive interview with Mr Zelensky, which saw the Ukrainian leader appear to suggest the US President could be doing more to help the invaded country. Mr Zelensky said: "To tell you the truth. Long ago, I asked President Biden for very specific items.

"He has the list. President Biden can enter history as the person who stood shoulder to shoulder with the Ukrainian people who won and chose the right to have their own country. [This] also depends on him."

Mr Zelensky also said he was prepared to die for his country. He told CBS: "I don't want to make myself out to be a hero. I love my family. I want to live many more years, but choosing between running or being with my people, of course I'm ready to give my life for my country."
