Ukraine has made headlines by launching British-French-made Storm Shadow missiles at targets inside Russia for the first time. This move comes shortly after Ukraine fired US-made ATACMS missiles into Russian territory.
According to a Russian military blog and Reuters, Ukraine's use of the United Kingdom-supplied missiles was confirmed by an official on condition of anonymity. The Defense Minister of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, refrained from confirming or denying the use of the missiles during a news conference, emphasizing their commitment to defending the country.
A Russian military blogger shared photos on Telegram of a Storm Shadow missile fragment, alleging that up to 12 missiles were fired on Russia's Kursk region. The fragment, bearing engravings that say 'Storm Shadow,' was confirmed by a weapons expert. Additionally, a video posted on Telegram showed audible explosions from the area, although it could not be definitively linked to the Storm Shadow missiles.
It is important to note that the UK and France have previously supplied Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles for use within its borders. These long-range missiles have a range of about 250 kilometers, slightly shorter than the American ATACMS.
As the situation unfolds, sources have reached out to the French Ministry of Defense for further comments on the matter.
