Ukraine conflict forces cruise schedules to be revised with sailings suspended

Cruise operators are modifying voyages and scrapping some sailings to avoid the Ukraine conflict. Several operators had trips taking in Baltic nations and the Black Sea scheduled this summer but some of these have now been suspended following the Russian invasion.

Saga has already axed a visit to the Crimean port of Odessa during a Black Sea cruise, after the UK Foreign Office advised against visits to the war-ravaged nation.

A spokeswoman for Saga told Travel Weekly : “Guests are in the process of being contacted about the change, and the rest of the cruise remains unaffected. We are now looking at the impact of today’s developments on our Baltic cruises later this year which were due to call in at St Petersburg.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and if necessary make further alterations to our itineraries whilst still ensuring the best experience for our guests.”

Riviera Travel is scheduled to set sail on Russia cruises later this year, but a spokesman said it was “currently monitoring the situation and will provide updates when possible”.

While Carnival UK brands P&O Cruises and Cunard have indicated they will change itineraries “as necessary”.

The operators added: “In light of the current situation evolving in Ukraine we will continue to monitor very closely and will amend itineraries as necessary following guidance. The safety and wellbeing of guests and crew is of the highest priority and we will advise guests of any changes.”

Air traffic between the UK and Ukraine has been grounded with carriers suspending flights. Ryanair, Wizz Air and Ukraine International Airlines have all axed services between the nations because of safety fears.
