Ukrainian Minister for Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshchuk has stated that the ongoing operation in Russia's Kursk region is aimed at safeguarding the border regions of Ukraine, particularly focusing on the Sumy region. This area has been subjected to continuous Russian artillery and missile attacks throughout the conflict.
Vereshchuk emphasized on Wednesday that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are establishing a security zone within the Russian Federation bordering Ukraine. She highlighted that there are Russian civilians residing in this zone, and Ukraine is committed to upholding international humanitarian law to ensure their protection.
As part of their efforts, the Ukrainian military will be carrying out humanitarian operations to assist civilians within the designated zone. Additionally, they will be facilitating the opening of corridors for civilians to evacuate, offering them the option to move either into Ukraine or to other areas within Russia.
A recent Ukrainian television report showcased the distribution of food and water packages to Russian civilians in a neighborhood of the Kursk region that is now under Ukrainian control.
