As the deadline for Donald Trump's return to the White House approaches, Ukraine is facing critical decisions amidst ongoing conflict with Russia. Ukrainian troops are struggling against Russian forces along multiple fronts, lacking experienced soldiers and uncertain about the continuity of military aid. The government in Kyiv is closely monitoring signals from Moscow and Washington, emphasizing its pursuit of a 'just peace' while temporarily setting aside ambitions to reclaim seized territory.

Russian forces, despite facing losses, are advancing steadily in the Donetsk region, aiming to fully occupy the illegally annexed area. Open-source data indicates that Russia currently controls over 18% of Ukraine, including Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukrainian units are outnumbered in the east, with Russian infantry employing tactics that challenge Ukrainian defenses.

Efforts to stabilize the front line and enhance defense capabilities are top priorities for Ukraine, as highlighted by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. International allies have pledged significant security assistance, including drones and air defense systems. However, prospects for peace negotiations remain dim due to Moscow's uncompromising stance on seeking victory over Ukraine.

The incoming Trump administration's approach to the conflict is uncertain, with conflicting statements on potential timelines for resolution. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is focused on advocating Ukraine's interests directly to Trump, emphasizing the nation's commitment to achieving lasting peace.

Key considerations for Kyiv in any settlement include ensuring effective ceasefire monitoring and deterring future aggression from Russia. However, Moscow's demands may include extensive limitations on Ukraine's armed forces and territorial concessions, posing challenges to a sustainable resolution.

While both sides express readiness for a summit, current conditions do not favor immediate negotiations. Premature attempts to advance talks could escalate tensions further, underscoring the complex dynamics at play in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
