Ukraine and Russia sign UN-backed grain export deal to ease global food crisis

Ukraine and Russia signed an historic deal today that will allow millions of tons of grain to head to starving countries.

The landmark agreement will finally allow Ukrainian Black Sea ports to reopen.

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said: “Today, there is a beacon on the Black Sea, a beacon of hope.”

Robert Mardini, director general of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said: “This is nothing short of life-saving.”

Western governments have accused Russia of weaponising food supplies since the war in Ukraine began in February.

Meanwhile, Russia has been accused of “looting” valuable steel heading for the UK and the European Union.

The boss of Ukraine’s largest steel firm said £500million worth of steel had been abandoned in the Azovstal mill and Mariupol when war broke out.

Metinvest’s Yuriy Ryzhenkov said: “Some products belong to European customers.”

The US believes Russia’s military is taking hundreds of casualties daily. A defence official said: “The chain of command is still struggling.”
