Formal negotiations between Ukraine and Moldova on joining the European Union have commenced, marking a significant milestone for the two former Soviet-bloc countries. The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, congratulated both nations on opening accession negotiations, emphasizing the positive impact this step will have on the people of Ukraine, Moldova, and the entire European Union.
The journey towards EU membership for Ukraine and Moldova began in 2022, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. While the EU has shown support by providing substantial financial aid, challenges lie ahead in the accession process.
Hungary, a key ally of Russia within the EU, initially posed obstacles for Ukraine's accession talks. Despite objections from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, negotiations have now commenced, although hurdles may still arise.
EU membership entails meeting specific criteria and negotiating various chapters covering economic standards and the rule of law. With a total of 35 chapters to be agreed upon by all negotiating parties, the process is expected to span over a decade for both countries.
