UK weather: Travel chaos as fierce winds and rain deluge sweeps the nation

The recent bout of strong winds and heavy rain will continue to batter Britain as we edge closer to the weekend on Thursday.

Travel chaos and power outages came into play on Wednesday as the miserable wet weather remained over the UK to follow from the gusty conditions. The Met Office had issued yellow weather warning for wind between 4am on Wednesday morning until 1pm.

Gusts reached speeds of up to 60mph in land with isolated winds peaking at 75mph in some places, which caused high waves on Scotland's coast.

And the pattern of strong winds followed by rain does not appear to be relenting with more traffic problems expected on Thursday.

Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir said: "Strong winds will continue to be a feature of our weather over the next few days.

"It has been the case over the last 24 hours with some high waves across Scotland and gales through Wednesday evening become confined to Shetland as a batch of heavy weather moves from the west towards the north east.

"Expect some heavy bursts of rain causing problems on the roads with a driving wind and then clearer slots of weather just moves in through the early hours of the morning."

Temperatures are not of the highs of Wednesday, where it peaked at 16C in some places, but conditions will still be mild at between 12C and 14C despite the wet conditions.

Ms Nasir continued: "Rain returns to Northern Ireland, pushing towards southwest Scotland, covering the Isle of Man as well as Anglesey. More showers gather across the far south.

"Temperatures a bit lower than what we've seen, certainly a bit of a chilly start to the day across Scotland but there will be some sunshine through the morning.

"Showery rain extends across the central belt covering much of northern England, pushing down towards west Wales. Some could turn heavy with the risk of thunder."
