UK weather: Temperatures to plunge in biting Arctic blast with gusts and wintry showers

The UK is set to experience a chilly week, with wintry showers and Arctic gusts set to breeze across Scotland and England.

The Met Office has reported that a low-pressure system that was in place over the UK has moved away towards the east, allowing gusts of chilly Arctic air to spread from Scotland in a southern direction across parts of the UK today.

These wintry gusts will cause temperatures to plummet to below average, following a milder couple of days.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “This week will see temperatures below average for the time of year for many. Blustery winds will become confined to the far northeast overnight, with winds falling light elsewhere. This will allow widespread frost by night, though in sunshine by day, it should feel pleasant enough.

"Wintry showers will continue across the northeast, becoming confined to Orkney and Shetland by tomorrow afternoon."

Low pressure is expected to return midweek from the southwest. It will bring outbreaks of heavy rain, with wintry showers and cold temperatures in the northeast. Milder weather is expected in the south.

UK weather forecast

Today:

Wintry showers are set to continue in the far northeast. In other areas, it will be mainly fine and sunny after a cold start. It will likely become cloudier from the southwest later. Temperatures will be rather cold, though with generally light winds.

In the evening, the far south-east will see rain at first, but this will clear later to leave a dry and mostly clear night for much of the UK. The far north of Scotland will see further wintry showers. Cold temperatures expected.

Wednesday:

Wednesday will see an unseasonably cold start. Variable cloud and isolated showers are expected in northern Scotland. The weather will be wintry in places, with showers in the far northeast. Further south, it will be largely dry with sunshine in the morning but patchy cloud developing later. Light rain or drizzle is expected in the southwest.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Cloudy for most of Thursday with spells of rain or showers in many areas, but drier and perhaps brighter at times in the far north. Friday looks to see variable cloud cover and a few scattered showers. Trending milder. Rain and milder conditions will begin to push northeast from Thursday.
