It was all sunshine and mild temperatures just a few days ago, but now, the UK is bracing for some seriously cold weather. After the warm weekend, the country has seen a dramatic temperature drop, thanks to Arctic winds sweeping in from the north.
On Wednesday, March 13, snow showers hit various parts of the UK, including the Southern Uplands, the Shropshire Hills, and the Cotswolds. Yes, you read that right—snow in March!
Just a few days ago, Sunday was the warmest day of the year, with temperatures soaring to 19.7°C in Crosby, a town near Liverpool. Across much of the country, temperatures ranged between 15°C and 19°C, making it feel more like May than March. Spring was in full swing, and we were all basking in sunshine. Those temperatures were 6 to 8 degrees warmer than usual for this time of year.

But now, it’s a different story. The warm spell has been replaced by a sharp drop in temperature, with some areas experiencing a sudden 10-degree drop. The culprit? A shift in wind direction to the north, bringing those chilly Arctic winds into play. So much for feeling like May!
For the rest of the week, it’s going to feel a lot colder. Daytime temperatures across the UK are expected to stay between 5°C and 9°C—well below the usual mid-March average of 7°C to 11°C. And it’s not just the daytime temperatures that will be a shock. Overnight, temperatures are set to plummet to near or slightly below freezing in many areas.
But while it’s going to be cold, the good news is that most places will stay dry, with a bit of sunshine to help make things feel a little less grim. So, if you’re venturing out, you might still catch a few rays, but don’t forget your warm coat!
It’s a stark reminder of how unpredictable the weather can be, especially in March. What a difference a few days can make!
