UK weather: Snow to fall this week with frost and rain as temperatures plummet to -2C

Snowfall could hit parts of the UK this week with temperatures going down around the country as we head into winter, forecasters have said.

The highest mountains of Scotland could see snow in the coming days, with lows of -1C or -2C likely on Friday.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said frost is likely overnight in northern areas of the country, but other parts of the UK will not see temperatures plummet yet.

Mr Snell told The Mirror: "We could potentially see snow on the highest mountains of Scotland.

"For this time of year, that is certainly not out of normal."

Snow is unlikely in other parts of the UK for now, the Met Office said (PA)

The forecaster said the rest of the country is unlikely to experience any snowfall in the next week.

Mr Snell said: "For the next five to seven days temperatures are generally around where they should be for this time of year."

But as we enter December, which is the first month of the meteorological winter, Mr Snell said the chances of cold weather and frost will increase across the UK.

He explained: "At the moment, there is no real strong signals of anything significant snowfall-wise for the next couple of weeks, at least."

Mr Snell said spells of snow are likely at some point in January and February, but it is still too early to predict it.

The meteorologist said: "Generally, temperatures will be cooling off as we head towards mid-December and the risk of frost will become more common."

Frost is more likely as we head into winter, the forecaster said (PA)

According to the Met Office's long-range weather forecast from November 28 to December 7, western areas will remain unsettled with rain and stronger winds more likely.

High pressure may become more influential in the south and east, leading to drier weather with temperatures expected to remain close to, if not slightly above average for this time of year.

The long-range forecast from December 8 to December 22 says: "Whilst temperatures may average out close to normal overall, colder conditions are possible at times, with a risk of overnight frost and fog."

UK 5 day weather forecast

This Evening and Tonight:

Heavy, blustery showers focused in the south and west at first, with possible thunder and hail, gradually becoming more confined to the north and west, with clear spells in many areas. Still breezy for most, so remaining largely frost-free.

Thursday:

After a fine start, another band of heavy rain moves eastwards across most parts, accompanied by strong, gusty winds. Turning brighter in the west with scattered heavy, blustery showers.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Friday will see sunshine and showers, these heaviest and most frequent in the northwest. Rain and strong winds moving east across the UK over the weekend, with blustery showers following.
