UK weather: Scorching 35C heatwave coming with fears of water shortage and hosepipe ban

Temperatures are expected to reach up to 35C in parts of the UK this week.

With another heatwave forecast, Britons have been urged not to waste water by having showers instead of baths, not filling the kettle unnecessarily, and only putting full loads of washing on.

The advice from water company chiefs is aimed at heading off a potential hosepipe ban later this summer if the recent hot, dry weather conditions persist.

The temperature could rise to as much as 98F (36.6C) in some parts of London and the south by July 15. Meanwhile, temperatures could exceed 93F (33.8C) in the midlands and and 80F (26.6C) in the north.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: "People should use water wisely and follow advice from their suppliers. Further hot, dry weather could put pressure on some areas.

"We will continue to take action where necessary. River flows and reservoir levels have receded across central and south western England."

Water regulator Ofwat said: "If possible, take a shower instead of a bath. A five-minute shower uses half the volume of a bath. Wait until you have a full load before using your washing machine or dishwasher."

A widespread hosepipe ban was last enforced in 2018 when seven million households faced restrictions. It came in the wake of the longest heatwave to hit the UK since 1976.

Customers were threatened with criminal prosecution and fines of up to £1,000 if they were caught using a hosepipe.

Odds of a ban have been cut to 1/2 by bookmakers Coral. Spokesman John Hill told the Daily Star : “Dry conditions ahead mean water restrictions this summer are now odds-on. It’s bad news for paddling pools.”

The peak of the summer usually comes in July or August. Last year the the mercury hit a high of 32.2C (89.96F) at Heathrow on July 20.
